Vortex offers spotting scopes in the categories "good, better, and best", and with the latest redesign the Viper HD 20-60x85 mm has moved up into "better still!" Fog proof, waterproof, fully multi-coated, includes neoprene case, no-sweat Vortex VIP warranty – it checks all the boxes. Some viewers miss the previous version’s dual focus knob, but most find that outweighed by the smooth helical focus combined with a perceptibly crisper, brighter image. The field of view is average, but the eye relief works well even with sun or eyeglasses. No, a 36’ close focus doesn’t impress, but it’s not much of a deterrence, either (if your binoculars won’t handle a bird at 36’, get new bins!) It is, to be fair, a heavy scope. If well-supported the views are worth it.
