New Jersey Audubon (NJA) is a privately supported, not-for profit, statewide membership organization. Founded in 1897, and one of the oldest independent Audubon societies, NJA has no affiliation with the National Audubon Society. In 1976 New Jersey Audubon founded the Cape May Bird Observatory and since then CMBO has grown to be a leader in research, environmental education, bird conservation and recreational birding activities.
At CMBO we strive to understand and instill appreciation for the needs of resident and migratory wildlife, specifically butterflies and birds, so that human ambitions do not undermine them. We do so through long-term research on migration, mentoring the conservation leaders of tomorrow, and providing programming to tens of thousands of visitors, members, and groups throughout the year. Funded almost entirely by the support of a national and international membership, two facilities in Cape May County serve our members' needs and interests.
