Product Overview

Nikon Monarch HG 8x42

The newest member of Nikon's Monarch Family, the Monarch HG 8x42 is aimed squarely at competitors in the $1000 range - and it's right on target! The Monarch HG feature four-position all-metal twist-up eyecup bases, which inspire confidence, while the rubber eyecups are comfortable. There is plenty of eye relief for eyeglass wearers, and the pop-up locking diopter ring allows for easy correction that stays put. The premium-level 435’ field of view help find a target and stay on it. We admit to not being fans of objective lens covers, which all suffer from a fatal flaw: you can't see through them! Manufacturers tether them to the bins in many imaginative ways. Hence, I was initially put off when I saw the rubber tabs attaching the lens covers to the Monarch HGs, thinking "those won't last a week, and then where will you be?"  But they hang nicely out of the way, and don't flop into my field of view. And I was pleasantly surprised to find that Nikon gives the option (and easy directions) for removing the tethered eyecups and replacing them with the included plain rubber objective end bumpers.

Compare with the Leica Trinovid HD, Vortex Razor HD, and Zeiss Conquest HD. Our preferences vary widely; some will prefer one rubber armoring over another, which focus wheel feels best, and how we view the color and contrast, so any one of these may be best for you.

    Nikon Monarch HG 8x42

I am very pleased with these so far! These binoculars are very light, quite sturdy, and easy to adjust. The image is crisp and clear even in low light (tested out in a pre-dawn Christmas Bird Count). I'm not a huge fan of the eyepiece lens cap because I can't clip it to my binocular harness, but if you use the included neck strap it won't be a problem.
