Leica Noctivid 8x42
It bears repeating that we live in the golden age of optics. Almost every optics manufacturer makes affordable binoculars that are better than anyone could get in the 1970's. Today’s top shelf optics are nothing short of phenomenal. Leica’s 8x42 Noctivid premiered at Bird Fair 2016 in Britain and has wowed viewers ever since. A one-hand grip on the barrel and you’re enjoying an expansive 443-foot field of view (too close to the competition to quibble). The view is often described as more three-dimensional than other binoculars. Zeiss and Swarovski beat the 6.2-foot close focus, but in birding or even butterflying how often does 15 inches really make a difference? With 19 mm of eye relief, four click-stop eyecups and a 56 mm minimum IPD, these fit nearly all adults. Schott HT glass prisms, high temperature plasma multi-coatings and internal baffles to eliminate stray light help create a high contrast, nearly achromatic image. They tip the scales at 30.3 ounces, but really don’t feel heavy. Or maybe you’re too engrossed in the view to think about it.
