Binoculars with 30 mm objectives of several brands have long been offered to fill a niche between "pocket" binoculars of 25 mm or less, and the 32 mm versions long considered the minimum size for birding. Swarovski's CL Companion binoculars, for example, are compact enough for travel, yet deliver about 88% of the brightness of a 32 mm binocular.
The original CL Companion filled that niche quite well, though at least in the mid-Atlantic states was not widely employed as a primary birding tool. The CL Companion II added the FieldPro Strap, improved ergonomics, and better eye relief for eyeglass wearers; it offered birders a genuine compact option without the "I'm only using these because I don't have my real binoculars with me" feeling that one may get with even the best pocket bins. The CL Companion II was a bit more slender, sported the traditional Swarovski green rubber armoring, and black rubber eye cups. Aesthetically and optically it fit perfectly in the Swarovski style tradition.
Now we have the CL Companion III series. How does it compare with it's predecessor? With the release a few years ago of the youth oriented My Junior 7x28 models in "Gacier Blue" and "Jungle Green", Swarovski expanded stylistically, and the CL Companion III continues on that path. It includes the same 8x30 and 10x30 configurations of prior versions, but each is offered in three new colors: Safari Brown, Desert Orange, and Jungle Green. Unlike their predecessors these colors carry on to the eyebox assembly. The weight has increased by 1.9 ounces and the overall dimenions are very slightly greater, though they are still smaller and lighter than most 8x32 options. The strap and its method of attachment are also completely new. Each comes with a round, bicolor braided strap loop that passes through the metal strap link and simply loops over the eyecup assembly. Easy-peasy! It will also accommodate many after-market straps or harnesses. Traditionalists might look askance; no doubt others will love it!
The small increases in size and weight are compensated by increased eye relief and a wider field of view. The wider field of view was quite evident, and as an eyeglass wearer, I appreciated being able to enjoy the full field of view while wearing glasses.
Swarovski continues to innovate optically and stylistically. If you're looking for a not-a-pocket lightweight binocular with excellent optical quality, include the new CL Companion III (and, while they last, the CL Companion II) on your must-try list!
